The Tennessee Titans season officially starts on July 23rd as training camp begins in Nashville at Ascension Saint Thomas Sports Park. Tennessee enters with a seemingly new lease on life and a ton of optimism, and will have a plethora of story lines to follow as the preseason progresses. Here are some major ones to watch as the 2024 regime gets underway.
No Vrabel, No Problem
The Titans hired new head coach Brian Callahan this offseason, who is now entering his first training camp with the team.
Callahan has been saying all the right things and seems to have changed the atmosphere around the building. It will be interesting to see how the “Coach Cally Era” differs from that of Mike Vrabel as the season starts to pick up speed.
Pushing The Line
The Titans made a concerted effort to improve the offensive line during free agency and the draft, adding more than five new faces to the roster. Some of those names include center Lloyd Cushenberry, guard Saahdiq Charles, tackle Leroy Watson, tackle Geron Christian and first-round pick J.C. Latham.
The investment is buoyed by the addition of famed offensive line guru Bill Callahan whom they will lean on to mold this young group. They will enter training camp with a projected four new starters up front with an average age of 24.5 and an overall average age of 24 across all five projected starters.
The Rise of Billy Jeans
One of the reasons that Brian Callahan considered the Tennessee job was because of the potential of new starting quarterback Will Levis. Levis in 2023 played in a total of nine games and put up 1,808 yards on 58.4% passing with eight touchdowns and four interceptions.
This offseason has been pivotal for the young signal caller as he has seemed to settle into his role as QB1. Callahan and others have sung his praises and lauded his maturity, but the question is can he put it all together on the field to secure his spot?
Battle In The Backfield
The post-Derrick Henry era has begun and the Tennessee Titans are rolling with what looks like a running back by committee system moving forward. The top two spots are locked in with incumbent back Tyjae Spears and newcomer Tony Pollard manning those positions. The question is who gets that coveted third spot?
Julius Chestnut, Dillon Johnson, Jabari Smalls and Hassan Haskins are all competing to be RB3 behind Pollard and Spears this year. Chestnut and Haskins have the familiarity with the team but Smalls and Johnson are young and extremely talented backs in their own right. It will be fun to watch who emerges from the pack and sets themself apart.
Different Animal, Same Beast?
Ran Carthon made a bevy of moves in the offseason to improve this Titans roster. Two of those were trading for former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback, L’Jarius Sneed and acquiring former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver, Calvin Ridley.
Both players are wildly talented and have had productive careers thus far. They’re coming to a team trying to build a competitor and will be looked upon as leaders. All eyes will be on them to continue their individual success as well as elevate the team to new heights.
