Team Needs: WR, HB, CB, DL
The Las Vegas Raiders have been looking for a way to break the mundane cycle of showing flashes and fizzling out every season. This offseason, they finally made moves to start that process by hiring head coach Pete Carroll and new general manager John Spytek.
They will now look to the NFL Draft to build up a roster that can compete in the most grueling conference in football, the AFC.
Possible Targets
Mason Graham – Defensive Lineman, Michigan
Jayden Higgins – Wide Receiver, Iowa State
Cam Skattebo – Halfback, Arizona State
Las Vegas is in a tough spot as they pick sixth in the draft order. They have multiple routes and players they can explore while not losing any value. It’s hard not to feel like they will lean towards their coach’s tendencies and reinforce the trenches with a premium talent.
Mason Graham has the skill to be a top-three pick in this class but the team needs will push him into the arms of the Raiders. He can play all along the defensive front, causing havoc for opposing rushers and passers alike. Pairing him with Christian Wilkins would give the Raiders a massive duo in the middle of their already stout defense.
The receiver room for the Raiders isn’t one to celebrate, and needs to add talent in a major way. The only player that has any semblance of a starting receiver on the roster is Jacobi Meyers and this regime will surely look to the draft to address the position.
Getting a big-bodied receiver who can attack all three levels of the field can really change an offense. Jayden Higgins fits that mold and is as polished as any receiver in the class. He is 6’4” and runs routes like a slot receiver. Giving new quarterback Geno Smith a reliable target outside along with Meyers and Brock Bowers would give the Raiders a deadly trio to compete in a tough AFC West division.
Sticking with the offensive side of the ball, the Raiders will need to improve their running game directly. What better way to do so than to upgrade the ball carrier itself.
The Seattle Seahawks under Pete Carroll were a power running team that played a physical brand of football. The Raiders could adopt that mentality and take Cam Skattebo out of Arizona State.
The former Sun Devil has rare power with the ability to stay on the field for all three downs. Adding him as the feature back could help unlock the ability of players like Dylan Laube, who are trying to find their place in the NFL.
The odds are in the favor of the Raiders in this draft. Their position in the draft will allow them to make the proper moves to improve their team and possibly become one of the young contenders in the league.
