Team Needs: DL, CB, WR, Safety
A common theme for the top five teams in the NFL Draft this season is starting with new regimes in their first draft. The Jacksonville Jaguars are a prime example of this as they moved on from head coach Doug Pederson and general manger Trent Baalke to bring in Liam Coen and James Gladstone.
They have made extensive moves this offseason in what looks like an attempt to gut a team and rebuild its foundation. Part of that is drafting young-talented replacements, and they are in a great position to do that here.
Possible Targets
Will Johnson – Cornerback, Michigan
Isaiah Bond – Wide Receiver, Texas
Lathan Ransom – Safety, Ohio State
Jacksonville, at their best, has been a defensive juggernaut, which shouldn’t change here. Their secondary needs some help, specifically at the boundaries as the league has gotten more talented at the receiver position.
Will Johnson is easily the best cornerback in the entire draft class, and he could fall into the laps of Jacksonville in April.
The 6’2” long-limbed defensive back plays at an elite level in both man and zone coverage, making him the most scheme-versatile corner available. The Jags would get a potential multi-year All-Pro out the box to pair with young shutdown man, Tyson Campbell, giving them a stingy duo outside.
Jacksonville signed former Washington Commander wide receiver, Dyami Brown, after losing veteran receiver, Christian Kirk ,via trade. They now have a stable of receivers but none of them are the clear-cut No. 2 receiver to Brian Thomas Jr.
Former Texas Longhorn, Isaiah Bond, could come in as a day two pick and instantly bolster that position.
Bond’s speed and big play ability next to Thomas’ already NFL-caliber play would be a nightmare for opposing defenses. Bond has the ability to work the underneath areas of the field and threaten slot corners and linebackers, while Thomas forces safeties to play deep.
Coen’s offense thrives in exposing the levels of the field and creating mismatches, which is a perfect fit for Bond.
After losing safety Andre Cisco, the Jaguars’ best safety is Darnell Savage. They will need to address that position at some point and day three will still have some great options available.
Ohio State Buckeye safety, Lathan Ransom, is a very solid player with leadership skills that would be affective in any scheme. His ability to play in the box will help the Jacksonville defense, and he plays deep third as well as any safety in the class. His versatility can be an almost one-to-one replacement for Cisco and complete this backend unit.
The draft will be a point of transition for this Jacksonville franchise, so they have to ace it. They have been on the cusp of greatness multiple times and couldn’t get over the hill but this draft is the one that could get them there.
