The first eight weeks of the 2024 season has been a time to forget for the Tennessee Titans. The team made a plethora of moves to improve the roster and compete in what looked to be a tough AFC South division, but have started 1-6 with no hope in sight.
The main issues for the team has been the offense and special teams but Tennessee has been stellar on defense under new defensive coordinator, Dennard Wilson. Wilson made his stance known in the offseason as to what is needed to succeed since he arrived.
The team added multiple names to their defensive unit and have shown up posting the No. 1 defense in the league thus far. Currently, the Titans rank first in total defense, third in passing defense, seventh in rushing defense, fifth in third down defense and 21st in scoring defense.
The team has made some major leaps in areas that were weaknesses for them just a year ago.
They are now forming a hard-nosed identity led by their captains Jeffery Simmons and Kenneth Murray Jr. That leadership has been what the Titans needed and the players have responded well, especially the young guys.
Rookies like Jarvis Brownlee Jr., Jaylen Harrell and T’Vondre Sweat have all been impactful in the early goings of the season.
Wilson seemed to have a plan to help the youngsters assimilate to the NFL.
“We have to figure out what they do well and we’ll put the scheme around them to allow their talents to flourish,” stated Wilson. “Football, it’s not about the scheme, it’s about the players.”
That seems to be exactly what they are doing thus far.
The 2024 draft class has produced a good amount of impact players for this franchise and could have one more to add to the fray.
After trading Ernest Jones IV, the Titans activated rookie linebacker Cedric Gray who will now join the roster after suffering a shoulder injury in the offseason. Gray was looked at as a premier prospect at the interior linebacker position and will now get a chance to make a name for himself in one of the league’s best linebacker units.
Tennessee has had a disappointing year to say the least but as of now, they can hang their hat on being a fearsome defensive team. If they keep this up the entire year, they could put themselves in a great spot heading into 2025.
