Tennessee Titans Week Two Analysis

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Titans came into their home opener against the New York Jets hoping to clinch their first win of the season. They had a tough start in week one that saw them lose in a close game. This was their chance at redemption.

Overview

For the second week in a row the Titans came out with what looked to be a dominant showing. The offense went three and out initially, but would score on a 20-yard Tony Pollard run on the ensuing drive. Tennessee would go up 7-0, shutting the Jets out in the first quarter.

The rest of the game would see Tennessee turn the ball over and struggle to generate meaningful drives on offense. Will Levis had a fumble and interception in the second quarter that spelled doom for Tennessee.

Levis would end his day going 19-28 (67.8%) for 192 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Tony Pollard had another stellar day with 102 total yards for this Titans’ offense. Calvin Ridley had a breakout performance for Tennessee as he turned in 77 yards on four receptions, adding a receiving and rushing touchdown.

The defense played well, despite giving up 265 total yards.

The special teams unit gave up another blocked punt. This is now the second time this season that the Titans have had a punt blocked in their own territory.

Positives

Tennessee can run the ball when they want to. They showed a good mix of power and misdirection to get into space and create lanes. They averaged 4.6 yards per carry showing they can still be a bruising team.

The defense got pressure early and often and bottled up the Jets offense for the most part. They only gave up one touchdown when the Jets started in their own territory.

Negatives

The offense could not consistently move the ball. Levis once again had two turnovers in the game and seemed to lose track of the situation.

The red zone efficiency was abysmal. Tennessee only scored on 25% of their trips (1/4) and 33% (1/3) of their goal-to-go situations.

The Titans’ defense could not generate a turnover for a second straight week.

Tennessee falls to 0-2 on the season. They now have two losses in which they have turned the ball over two or more times in a game.

They will now get a very young and explosive Green Bay Packers team at home next Sunday. This will be a make or break game for them as the young season continues.
