Flowery Branch – Atlanta Falcons head coach, Raheem Morris, ramped up the third day of training camp by letting the team compete in drills, including in 11-0n-11 drills and the red-zone drills.
On 11-on-11 drills, quarterback Kirk Cousins came out the gate completing a dart across the middle to wide receiver Drake London for 13 yards. Then, Cousins connected with tight end Kyle Pitts for 30-yards down the sideline and displayed his arm strength on a 50-yard bomb for a touchdown to wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud III.
Cousins looked sharp and showcased his accuracy throughout practice. He didn’t throw an incomplete pass until towards the end of practice during a red-zone drill.
Linebacker Arnold Ebiketie believes Cousins experience and talent will enhance practices.
“Just watching practice, you can tell how much of a difference [Cousins] he make, being out there as a veteran,” said Ebiketie. “He seen a lot, he understands defenses, he knows how to bring a team together. I’m excited and ready to go to battle with him.
Rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. also displayed his talent during practice.
Penix first pass of the 11-on-11 drills was on the money to wide receiver Rondale Moore on a back-shoulder completion for a 17 yards. Then he completed a pass to tight end Austin Stogner across the middle for a 15-yard gain.
“I feel like [passing the ball] it was good, but it’s a lot of things I want to improve on,” stated Penix. “I feel like I got a lot of areas to get better in but and that’s what I’ve been working on but today was a pretty good day.”
He had his teammates buzzing and cheering after he threw a 40-yard pass that was perfect but it was dropped by Moore.
During the red-zone drill, he was able to lead the offense to two scores, one against the first-team defense, including an eight-yard pass to Stogner.
Other Highlights
Wide receiver Darnell Mooney stood out in practice with multiple catches. Mooney caught an eight-yard touchdown, 12-yard curl, 13-yard square-in and a 20-yard comeback from Kirk Cousins.
