Flowery Branch, Ga. – After the first day of pads showcased the potential of the Atlanta Falcons’ offensive line and running game, the defensive line bounced back and demanded all of the attention on the second day of pads.

For multiple years, the defensive line has been the one area that seemed to be lacking consistency besides defensive tackle Grady Jarrett. Day 7, was an joint effort and gave a glimpse of what could be expected for the upcoming season.

Defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake was pleased with what he saw in practice.

“I was really please on how the guys used their hands, fit up the run game, got as much pass rush as we could but also staying away from our quarterback and keeping him healthy,” stated Lake.

The defensive line was able to get five sacks in the 11-on-11 drills. The players who got to the quarterbacks were defensive ends Grady Jarrett and Kentavius Street, defensive tackles Ruke Orhorhoro and Brandon Dorlus and linebacker Milo Eifler.

All Eyes On Him

One player who has elevated his play in training camp has been cornerback Clark Phillips III. Phillips has lead the team so far with two interceptions during 11-on-11 drills, including one he caught off of a “tip-drill” where he dove for the ball. He’s also been batting balls down and in the hip pocket of receivers.

“It really started back in the offseason where he came in and was ready to learn outside and also learn inside,” said Lake. “I’ve seen a ton of growth from him playing nickel for us an he’s also made a lot of big plays playing outside as well.”

Kirk Looks Healthy

Quarterback Kirk Cousins has been nothing short of refreshing for the Falcons during training camp. He’s shown accuracy, leadership and professionalism but today he showed that he is healthy.

During an 11-on-11 drill, Cousins escaped the pocket and gained six yards before running out of bounds without getting touched. Cousins said it boosted his confidence and his teammates as well.

“I’ve never heard an opposing sideline so happy,” stated Cousins. “They were like ‘Yeah Kirk, heck yeah’ and high fiving me as I ran to my huddle. But I heard halfway down the sideline [Raheem Morris] Ra yelling ‘blow the whistle, blow the whistle!”
