Flowery Branch – Entering year two for edge rusher Jalon Walker, confidence was never an issue, but now, his expectations of himself are far more concrete than year one.
Walker played 15 games and started nine of them in his rookie year, totaling 36 tackles and 5.5 sacks, including nine QB hits and five tackles for loss. Getting more opportunities to rush from the edge and play as an outside linebacker this upcoming season has the second-year starter excited.
“I’m open and embracing the new role that can embark on my journey,” stated Walker. “Also had the opportunity, me and coach Brich [Jeff Ulbrich] spoke about of the program and the playing style we’ll have this year. I’m really excited about the role.”
His sophomore season in the NFL comes with more responsibility. The coaches will lean on him more to be a a leader on and off the field.
Not only is he ready to accommodate his coaches’ wishes, but he expects and is looking forward to showcasing his leadership skills.
“This is something I asked myself to do more,” said Walker. “That’s part of my standards, it’s how I roll and how I hold myself on a day-to-day basis.”
The standard of being a leader comes from his background. His father was a college football coach, so the leadership skill comes naturally.
That was evident while playing at the University of Georgia. Walker was one of the main leaders of the team and lead them to SEC Championships and to a National Championship.
“Last year of course, going into my [rookie] campaign, finding my way, but throughout the year, I gained the confidence of figuring out how I could be able to lead this football team, and of course in year two, I planned to do so.”
Walker displayed his talent and why he was chosen as the Falcons‘ No. 1 pick, but this year, he’s ready to showcase and take on the role of being a leader for not only his defense but the entire team.
