Flowery Branch, Ga – When the Atlanta Falcons signed free agent Darnell Mooney, it’s safe to say that he wasn’t expected to be looked as the older guy in the wide receiver room.
Mooney is entering his fifth year in the NFL, which the first four was for the Chicago Bears.
Normally, a fifth year guy is still considered young and has other receivers on his team that he looks up to. In this instance, he has the most experience when it comes to playing time on the field.
Mooney has accepted his role and realizes that he has to lead by his actions and also by being vocal.
“Yeah, I’m talking all the time, giving some advice to the guys,” said Mooney. “They always come up to me and calling my phone and whatnot. When they call me ‘OG’, I’m like stop that.”
The 26-year old’s experience has more value than just playing time. His familiarity with the offensive scheme (he played in Chicago) will not just help him and the receivers but also help his quarterback, Kirk Cousins.
“I’ve been in this offense for a little bit thoughout my career, I’ve been knowing it very well,” mentioned Mooney.
Mooney says there can be a downfall by having experience in this offensive scheme.
“The bad thing about focusing it on and knowing the offense very well is you tend to bring some of the old stuff you already learned or like,” stated Mooney. “You gotta change your way of thinking of what, like their terminology is. I think I kind of got the upper hand of it all.”
Add in the fact that he’s also giving advice to defensive players, Mooney has already provided value in just the first week of training camp.
