Bijan Robinson Hopes Record-Setting Contract Opens Doors For Running Backs

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Bijan Robinson is officially the NFL’s highest-paid running back, but the Atlanta Falcons star hopes his new contract represents more than just a personal milestone.

Robinson signed a three-year contract extension worth up to $75 million on Tuesday, making him the highest-paid player at his position in league history. While he has been on the practice field for the second consecutive day, Robinson has yet to participate in team drills as the Falcons continue to ease him back into action.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski said the Falcons have a plan in place for Robinson’s workload and expect him to participate fully once that progression is complete.

For Robinson, the extension is another step toward restoring value to the running back position.

“It’s such a cool thing to see the process, my teammates and everyone behind me,” Robinson said.

He added that several elite college running backs reached out after news of the deal became public.

“‘Thank you,’ was the common sentiment,” stated Robinson. “I hope it helps elevate the running back market.”

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has been among those following Robinson’s negotiations closely. The former college stars both entered training camp in “hold-in” situations, attending practices but not participating while awaiting new contracts.

Robinson said the two stayed in regular contact throughout the process.

“We just told each other, ‘Just hang in there, everything’s going to get done, everything’s going to be all right,'” Robinson mentioned. “And it’s cool to see him go through it, too. And I hope he gets the most out of what he deserves because he deserves it — deserves it all.”

The congratulations poured in shortly after the news became official, including one from fellow Texas Longhorn Matthew McConaughey.

“The news of my contract broke at 7:56 a.m., Matthew McConaughey had texted me congratulations by 7:58 a.m.,” Robinson said.

Despite the historic contract, Robinson said one of the best reminders he received came from Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich.

“You got this contract based on who you are,” Robinson recalled Ulbrich telling him. “Just be Bijan. You don’t have to be anyone else.”

Now with his long-term future secured in Atlanta, Robinson’s focus shifts back to football and the Falcons can’t wait to get him back.
