Titans Rookie Anthony Hill Jr. Showing Early Signs Of A Bright Future

The Tennessee Titans entered the offseason needing to add young talent on both sides of the football, and they made a concerted effort to address those needs through the draft. One of the most intriguing additions was former Texas standout linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., whom Tennessee selected in the second round.

Hill established himself as a versatile defensive weapon during his career with the Longhorns, recording more than 249 tackles, 17 sacks and three interceptions. His ability to impact the game in multiple ways made him an attractive prospect, and that versatility has already been on display during his first training camp with the Titans.

The rookie linebacker has consistently found ways to make plays while earning the respect of his coaches and teammates.  Hill’s dedication hasn’t been limited to what he has done on the field.

Hill entered his first NFL season determined to improve his conditioning and overall athleticism. He lowered his body fat percentage, even giving up candy as part of the process and believes the changes have helped him become a more explosive player.

“I feel a little bit faster and I feel like I can move a little bit better, getting in and out of breaks,” Hill said. “I feel good!”

That added athleticism could prove valuable in Robert Saleh’s defense, where Hill will be asked to handle several responsibilities. Fortunately, his experience at Texas prepared him to embrace a versatile role at the next level.

“Coach [Saleh] does a good job of naturally having the Mikes do a lot of stuff,” stated Hill. “We’re on three, we’re in the box, we’re outside the box, so just being able to hone in on the details is going to be exciting.”

Hill also has the benefit of learning from veterans such as Cody Barton and Cedric Gray as he continues adjusting to the NFL.

“They’re kind of big with helping me,” Hill said.

His learning opportunities can extend beyond his own locker room when the Titans travel to San Francisco for joint practices. There, Hill will have an opportunity to see one of the NFL’s premier linebackers, Fred Warner, who previously played under Saleh.

When asked about the opportunity to learn from Warner, however, Hill’s competitive mindset quickly emerged.

“He’s on the other side right now,” Hill said. “Maybe if I can catch him after we’re done or something, I’ll probably get some tips from him, but right now we’re on the opposite side.”

It was a simple response, but one that perfectly captured Hill’s approach.

There will be plenty of time to study other great linebackers. For now, Hill is focused on competing.

The Titans drafted Hill with the expectation that his athleticism, versatility and playmaking ability could become valuable pieces of their defense. His early development and commitment to improving his body are encouraging signs.

If his start to training camp is any indication, Tennessee may have found a young linebacker capable of becoming a significant part of its defense for years to come.
