Team Needs: Tackle, CB, Edge, WR
No team has been in more flux over the last four years than the New England Patriots. They have now hired their third coach in that span and will look to start over yet again in 2025. Mike Vrabel will be at the helm once again as a head coach, bringing over some familiar faces from his previous stops around the league.
Like Vrabel-led teams trend to do, they will lean on their ability to develop talent from the draft. This 2025 class has some high upside prospects that could be the difference between the Patriots returning to prominence or being a bottom feeder again.
Travis Hunter – Cornerback/Wide Receiver, Colorado
Aireontae Ersery – Tackle, Minnesota
Tommi Hill – Cornerback, Nebraska
New England has holes at multiple positions but they could address two of those with one player. Travis Hunter has the ability to play both the cornerback spot and wide receiver at a high level but he may fit more as a receiver in New England.
The Patriots need a true top-end talent at the receiver spot to help young signal caller Drake Maye.
Hunter is a playmaker with big-time potential. His speed and great hands are bolstered by one of the highest football IQ’s in the entire class. He isn’t a top tier receiver out the box but he has top 15 potential, and that is enough to take a flier early on in the draft.
The offensive line is in need of some TLC as well and this class is full of talent in the trenches. That being said, Mike Vrabel could find a blindside protector in the early goings of day two.
Aireontae Ersery is one of the best pound-for-pound athletes in the entire class. His height, long speed and technique are all near the top of the position group and will help him make an immediate impact.
The good thing about Ersery is he can play both left or right tackle, allowing the Patriots to shuffle the line as needed to get the best five players on the field. Getting protection for Maye also helps his development, which is invaluable.
If the Patriots move Hunter to wide receiver, which would be best, then they will need to address the cornerback position at some point. They signed veteran boundary man Carlton Davis but lost a vital piece in Jonathan Jones, the jack of all trades. This leaves a void that could be filled by a rookie.
Mike Vrabel loves players with experience, and Nebraska’s Tommi Hill doesn’t lack in that area. The four-year starter has played 41 games in his career at Arizona State and Nebraska. He has great ball skills with a big frame.
Hill would allow the Patriots to move Davis inside and have Christian Gonzalez follow the opposing No. 1 wide receiver in nickel packages. Having three corners that can swarm the backend also helps the front seven, which was a weakness of the team a year ago.
The rubber meets the road for the Pats in April. This draft will set the stage for their climb back to the mountaintop behind good leadership and a strong plan.
