Team Needs: Tackle, DL, IOL, TE
The Kansas City Chiefs were 60 minutes from being the first team in NFL history to three-peat as Super Bowl champs, but were bested by the Philadelphia Eagles. They have been a team that always seems to find a way to win despite their roster’s shortcomings but the league is now catching up to them.
Brett Veach has always been a shrewd operator in the offseason and will now face one of the most important drafts of his career. The Chiefs still have a championship roster but will need to add young, top-end talent to round out the team.
Possible Targets
Omarion Hampton – Halfback, North Carolina
Darius Alexander – Defensive Lineman, Toledo
Hayden Conner – Guard, Texas
One of the biggest issues of the Chiefs’ roster has been the lack of an elite running back, especially since the start of the Patrick Mahomes era. The last first-round running back the team took was Clyde Edwards-Helaire in 2020. The team could look to try again with a more elite prospect at the position.
The modern-day running back is one that can not only grind out tough yards but also be effective as a pass catcher. North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton is one of those backs. Hampton’ speed, power and versatility have put him in the spotlight as one of the top prospects in the draft class. He has a knack for finding space with patience and breaking home run plays due to his elite contact balance.
In the pass game he is a solid pass protector with good functional strength to stonewall linebackers and safeties with relative ease. Andy Reid hasn’t had a back with Hampton’s level of talent since Jamal Chalrles, and adding him to this offense would make the Kansas City offense more balanced.
Kansas City had good success defending the run against the elite rushing teams in the NFL. They lost a key part to their interior in Derrick Nnadi and will need to replace his production up front. Day two of the draft will still have some solid talent available in the front four and Veach has done a great job finding gems there.
Toledo’s Darius Alexander is one of the most powerful defensive linemen on the draft class. He is a massive space eater with an uber-explosive first step off the ball. Alexander shoots his hands with violent velocity and keeps blockers off his body due to his long reach. Steve Spagnuolo loves versatile defensive linemen that can rush the passer and Alexander does that as well as any interior man in the class. He totaled eights sacks over the last two seasons while playing primarily inside. Pairing him with Chris Jones would give the Chiefs an almost impenetrable front that can cause issues for any offensive line.
Trading away Joe Thuney was necessary evil but it also left the Chiefs with a hole on the offensive line. The guard position is one that needs to be addressed and the later rounds will have some studs that could interest Kansas City.
One such player is former Longhorn Hayden Conner. Conner is an elite pass protector at the guard position showing great punch and nimble feet. He rarely loses his leverage when getting into his sets and anchors as well as anyone in the class. He will need some development as his strength and technique need work, but he could still be a day one starter. The Chiefs need offensive line help and Conner would give them a young stud to help solidify the trenches in front of Mahomes.
The Super Bowl was an eye opener for the Kansas City franchise. If they hope to get back to the big dance they will need to hit on their draft picks and continue to develop the talent they have in 2025.
