Who Moves On? Roaring Cubs Or Wavy Marlins? – Miami Marlins vs. Chicago Cubs Preview

The Marlins are a story to say the least. From the COVID outbreak to now being a playoff team looking to make noise in the post season. This team is together from Brian Anderson to Chris Wallach: they have each other’s backs and want to win for each other. That attitude can push any team forward and it seems to have propelled Miami.

Chicago has the chance to have two teams make deep runs in the playoffs this season, and the Cubs are going to be one. The Cubs have hung their hat on their pitching this year, and Yu Darvish has delivered. If strikeouts are your cup of tea and you’re a Cubs fan, this team is going to be exciting to watch moving forward.

By The Numbers:

Chicago Cubs (34-26) Miami Marlins (31-29)
74 Home runs (17) 60 Home runs (25)
.220 Batting Avg (27) .244 Batting Avg (17)
3.99 ERA (10) 4.86 ERA (21)
.233 Opp Batting Avg (8) .261 Opp Batting Avg (25)

The Marlins are odd because their numbers don’t mirror their play. They can be a scary offensive team in spurts, and a stingy defensive team. In the same breath they can squander a game with bad batting and errors on the mound. They will need to be more of the former to beat the Cubs.

This Cubs team is special on the mound. Their bullpen can really be a force and in the playoffs that will pay off big time for them. Their offense can be a weak point but not enough to impact them negatively going forward. If they ride their pitchers, they can easily dispatch any team in the playoffs.

Key Players:

Cubs: Kyle Hendricks, Pitcher

2020 Stats: 2.88 ERA – 64 Strikeouts – 2.40 Opp Batting Avg

Hendricks is the Cubs’ other ace starter and boy can he light you up. If needed, he has the endurance to pitch a complete game and they may have him do that if he gets hot on the mound.

Marlins: Jesus Aguilar, First Baseman

2020 Stats: .277 BA – 34 RBI – 8 Home Runs

This Marlins offense goes as Aguilar’s bat does. He will need it to catch fire to mitigate the Cubs’ pitching rotation.

Prediction:

Cubs over Marlins

Pitching is a strength that gets overlooked by many but here it will be the deciding factor. The Cubs are built from the mound and on that mound is an ace in Darvish. Cubs move on in this series.
