As the NFL season comes to a close, the two biggest questions at the quarterback position are Robert Griffin III (RG3) and Johnny Manziel. These two former first round draft picks have a lot in common. Both are former Heisman Trophy winners, two sport athletes, and highly touted coming out of college. Fast forward to now and both quarterbacks have worn out their welcome with their respective teams even with having time remaining on their contracts. The Washington Redskins expected more out of RG3 and the Cleveland Browns are disappointed with Manziel. Although both of these guys have faced adversity during their short career they still have upside. As a matter of fact, there are numerous teams interested in these two guys.
After sitting out the entire 2015-16 regular season, RG3 has learned a very valuable lesson. No matter how talented you are, you can be replaced in the NFL. I’m sure it was embarrassing for him to stand on the sideline in sweats while he got demoted from second string to third string. He should use this as fuel so that when he gets his next opportunity, he will make the best of it. Although he has one year left on his contract, the Redskins are not going to pay him $16.2 Million next year as a backup being that their main focus will be to sign Kirk Cousins to a long term deal. RG3 is going to be released and when he is, the potential landing spots are the Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, and Los Angeles Rams. The most likely place for RG3 would be the Browns because they are in desperate need of a quarterback and have a newly named offensive minded Head Coach in Hue Jackson. RG3 getting signed by the Browns would be his best opportunity to start immediately.
Unlike RG3, Manziel played in the 2015-16 season and did fairly well showing some growth. He threw for 1,500 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions while rushing for 230 yards. He’s biggest problem was off the field issues. It seemed like every week there was a story about Manziel drinking, partying, or fighting with his girlfriend. Although Manziel has not been charged with any crime, he has embarrassed the Browns franchise with his off the field issues. It has been reported by multiple sources that Manziel will be released in March. Even with his issues, there a few teams interested according to Manziel, which are the Cowboys, Rams, and Kansas City Chiefs. His most likely spot is the Cowboys because the Rams are not going to start off in L.A. with controversy and the Chiefs have no need for a QB after signing Alex Smith to an extension last year. The Cowboys seem ideal because they need a backup QB and will enjoy the publicity.
If I was a NFL General Manager or Owner, I would choose RG3 over Manziel simply because he has more than likely learned his lesson and will be humble going forward. Also, he will not create anywhere near the circus as Manziel will. When it comes down to it, anyone that has any sense would not want Manziel as the face of their franchise right now; maybe in the future but not right now. He has to rebuild credibility as a backup somewhere. RG3 has the advantage over Manziel because he is a year ahead maturity wise.
