No Fools Gold – San Francisco 49ers 2023 Draft Profile

The late rounds of the draft have treated the San Francisco 49ers well. Last year they found Brock Purdy who has emerged as the starter for the foreseeable future. Now with no picks in the first two days, they will have to strike gold again with their late round picks.

Anthony Johnson, CB, Virginia

Trey Dean III, Safety, Florida

Mason Brooks, Guard, Ole Miss

The Niners were just in the NFC title game last season mainly due to their defense. One of the weak spots of that defense is the secondary, but they can help strengthen that unit in the draft.

Two players that should get a look are Anthony Johnson and Trey Dean III.

Johnson is a long corner with a well built frame. He plays the position with good physicality and is aggressive around the ball. He can also run stride for stride with faster outside receivers due to his deceptive long speed.

Trey Dean III is a safety with a versatile skill set. He has good strength and pop behind his pads when playing in the box. He can also cover slot receivers head up and is rangy as a backend defender. He needs to work on his ball skills but he can develop that as he plays at the next level.

San Francisco also needs to bolster the offensive line after losing multiple players to free agency. Getting a versatile player like Mason Brooks would make the most sense.

Brooks has natural strength that allows him to anchor against power rushers with good success. He is very intelligent and rarely gets turned around when presented with different looks. He has good enough feet to play some outside in spurts and that adds to his value.

The Niners are the best team in the NFC West and they could continue to be with a good draft. They found a gem last year and could find a steal this season as well.
