The New England Patriots have cut former NFL MVP, Cam Newton before the regular season. Newton was heading into his second year with the Patriots after signing a one-year deal this offseason.
Newton was in a quarterback battle with with this year’s 15th overall pick, Mac Jones during training camp. Jones finished the preseason with 388 yards passing, one touchdown, zero interceptions and a completion percentage of 69.2%.
There was speculation if Jones would be able to take over the starting spot during training camp.
“I’ve gotten a lot of opportunities to play and I can improve on everything I want to improve on,” stated Jones. “So I think learning from [Brian] Hoyer, Cam, Jarrett [Sitdham], anyone I can and listening to Josh [McDaniels] and his coaching, there’s a lot of work to do but I think I’ve made progress.”
Now Newton will be free agent entering in his 11th season. Last year he had 2,657 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns and 10 interceptions. For his career, he’s thrown for 31,698 yards, 190 touchdowns and 118 interceptions.
