BEREA, Ohio — Cleveland Browns rookie wide receiver Antonio Callaway was busted for marijuana possession and driving with a suspended license Sunday morning. Callaway has a hearing scheduled Thursday morning in Strongsville’s Mayor’s Court.

Per Head Coach Hue Jackson, Callaway was having a strong training camp and as a result is listed to start Browns’ first preseason game against the New York Giants. Browns recently traded away receiver Corey Coleman to the Buffalo Bills which paved the way for Callaway to get the starting nod.

While in college Callaway was suspended several times from the University of Florida for alleged sexual misconduct (which he was cleared of), a misdemeanor marijuana citation and was involved in a credit card scam. He also had a diluted sample during a drug test at the NFL scouting combine before the NFL draft. Due to the diluted sample Callaway is already in stage 1 of the NFL’s Substance Abuse program. A diluted sample is when there’s too much water in the specimen and it counts as a positive due to players overloading on water to mask drug use.

“We are aware of the citation (and) are in the process of gathering more information and will comment further at the appropriate time,” Browns said in a statement.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy stated in an email, “The matter will be reviewed under the NFL-NFLPA substances of abuse policy.”

Browns drafted Callaway in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
