Atlanta – During the start of this season, the Atlanta Falcons have had their fair share of concerns at the quarterback position. They look to turn the tide after naming Michael Penix Jr. the starting quarterback for the Thursday night matchup against the Green Bay Packers.
It has been a disappointing start to the season for the Falcons, beginning the season 0-2. The offense has been stagnant in the first two games.
Third string quarterback Cooper Rush has thrown for only 229 yards, one touchdown, four interceptions and lost one fumble in his two starts.
The Falcons have a short week to prepare for the Packers at Lambeau Field. Now that Penix has been named the starter, it gives the Falcons cohesiveness within the offense.
With Penix returning as the starting quarterback, it has boosts the Falcons’ confidence. It also injects energy into the fans and the team.
“Having #9 [Penix] back is a good momentum,” stated Kyle Pitts Sr.. “Obviously coming off this loss, we’re looking to get in the win column this week.”
Penix in 14 career games has a 4-8 record and has thrown for 2,757 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. What has stood out the most for the third-year quarterback is his poise and never looking to panic under pressure.
For the last two weeks, Penix has shared the first-team reps in practice with Rush. Safety Xavier Watts got a chance to see Penix up close.
“He done a couple of things against us and they sprinkled him in as much as possible,” said Watts. “I felt like he’s looked good, he’s done a great job and a he’s a great-on talent and a smart player.”
Although the Falcons have started 0-2, everyone in the division has one loss. The Falcons only trail the Carolina Panthers and the New Orleans Saints by one game.
Although he’s missed the first two games, it seems like Penix is right on time to lead the Falcons for the rest of the season.
