Atlanta Falcons training camp has already provided several storylines, from an explosive rookie making an immediate impact to encouraging quarterback developments and a philosophical shift in the preseason. Here are the three takeaways from camp so far.
1. Zachariah Branch is proving he can be an instant playmaker
Rookie wide receiver Zachariah Branch has been one of Atlanta’s most exciting players through the opening stretch of training camp. His elite quickness and ability to create separation have consistently stood out, giving the Falcons another explosive weapon in an offense that’s already loaded with talent.
He caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Michael Penix Jr. in 7-on-7s, which A.J. Terrell and Jessie Bates were the nearest defenders.
During one-on-one drills, defensive backs have struggled to get their hands on the rookie off the line of scrimmage. His short-area burst and route-running have routinely created separation, making him a reliable target regardless of who is under center.
As wide receiver depth continues to take shape, Branch is making a strong case to become a meaningful contributor from Week 1.
2. Jack Strand continues to earn praise while Atlanta waits for its veteran quarterbacks
With Tua Tagovailoa limited by back tightness and Michael Penix Jr. continuing his recovery from last season’s torn ACL, undrafted rookie quarterback Jack Strand has received valuable first-team practice reps.
So far, the rookie has made the most of the opportunity.
Veteran tight end Kyle Pitts praised Strand’s growth after Friday’s practice.
“Really impressive to be thrown into the fire like that,” Pitts said. “He’s embracing it. It’s pretty cool to see how he’s’s growing each day. Each day he’s getting better.”
Head coach Kevin Stefanski echoed those sentiments.
“Jack is doing a nice job. As a quarterback, you’re prepared to be the starter. That’s just how you do it.”
Although Atlanta expects both Tagovailoa and Penix to return, Strand has taken advantage of the extra opportunities and has shown the poise coaches want from a young quarterback learning the offense.
3. The Falcons plan to play their starters during the preseason
Atlanta is taking a different approach to the preseason under Kevin Stefanski.
After sitting most starters during the preseason over the previous two seasons under former head coach Raheem Morris, the Falcons plan to give their starters live game action this August.
Stefanski said Atlanta intends to play its starters in the first and third preseason games, giving veterans valuable reps before the regular season begins.
The decision reflects a new philosophy centered around building rhythm and chemistry, particularly with several new pieces on offense and uncertainty at quarterback while Tagovailoa and Penix work their way back to full participation.
If the plan stays intact, Falcons fans will get an early look at how Atlanta’s projected starters perform together before Week 1.
As Tagovailoa and Penix inch closer to returning, the competition and intensity should only continue to increase, making the coming weeks some of the most important of Atlanta’s preseason.
