- NFL Power Rankings Playoff Edition – New Arrivals - January 9, 2025
With a few more weeks to play in the NFL, we’re coming to the time when two of the most popular football based phrases will be said over and over. You will here the words “seeding/seed” and “eliminated from playoff contention” dozens of times over the next four weeks.
There are already six teams “eliminated from playoff contention” and more to follow as we navigate through this holiday season. Hopefully they’ve booked a nice vacation for the offseason.
1. Detroit Lions (12-1)
The top ranked team in total points scored and the second ranked team in total points allowed. They only play two teams down the stretch with a winning record.
2. Kansas City Chiefs (12-1)
One of the reason the average person could believe there’s a script to the NFL season is the way Kansas City just seems to be able to win their games on the last drive in the final seconds. The kind of cheesy drama that rivals a Lifetime channel original movie.
3. Philadelphia Eagles (11-2)
Despite an apparent rift between A.J. Brown and Jalen Hurts, the Eagles remain hotter than a stolen car parked in front the local gambling spot.
4. Minnesota Vikings (11-2)
Whoever finishes with the fourth seed in the playoffs will more than likely host Minnesota in the wild card round of the playoffs. That would be a massive pile of you know what for the home team.
5. Buffalo Bills (10-3)
The Bills have already won the AFC East and Josh Allen had one of the best statistical days in NFL history on Sunday. Would’ve been even better if they actually won the game and kept themselves in contention for the number one seed.
6. Pittsburgh Steelers (10-3)
The Steelers will get a chance to prove what they’re made of with a tough set of games right before the playoffs. They’re next three opponents have a combined 31-8 record.
7. Green Bay Packers (9-4)
The Packers can play with the best of them, but can they beat the best of them? Their four losses have come against teams that currently have a better record than them.
8. Baltimore Ravens (8-5)
The late bye could be a blessing in disguise for the Ravens. They’ll have a couple of tough matchups, not to mention a couple of division games down the stretch.
9. Houston Texans (8-5)
Coming off of their bye week, Houston will host Miami and then head to Kansas City.
10. Denver Broncos (8-5)
The Broncos have a mixed bag of opponents after their bye week. Other then Cincinnati all of their opponents have something to play for.
11. Washington Commanders (8-5)
Washington will try and secure their first playoff spot since 2020. They only have one game left on the schedule against a team with a winning record.
12. Los Angeles Chargers (8-5)
The Chargers have lost both games to Kansas City by a total of nine points. They’re salivating at a chance for a third matchup in the playoffs.
13. Seattle Seahawks (8-5)
Jaxon Smith-Njigba is averaging 85.7 receiving yards per game in his last four games. Seattle has won all four of those games.
14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-6)
Tampa Bay has won three in a row and have now worked their way back to the top of the NFC South. They’ll have to finish a game ahead of Atlanta to secure the division title.
15. Los Angeles Rams (7-6)
The Rams latest victory has put them on a straight path to the NFC West division title. They have three more division games left, including Seattle in the final game of the season.
16. Indianapolis Colts (6-7)
The Colts slim chance at making the playoffs will get a big boost after their game against Denver this weekend. All of the other games are against teams that will be drafting in the top ten next year.
17. Arizona Cardinals (6-7)
Kyler Murray has thrown three touchdowns and five interceptions during the Cardinals three game losing streak. Arizona is losing ground in the race for a division title.
18. Atlanta Falcons (6-7)
Kirk Cousins has thrown eight interceptions and zero touchdowns on the Falcons current four game losing streak. As a matter off fact, it’s been nine interceptions in a row since his last touchdown pass.
19. Miami Dolphins (6-7)
A few weeks ago, the Dolphins were dead last in total points scored in the league. They’ve moved up to be ranked 23rd heading into this week after scoring 30 or more in their last three victories.
20. San Francisco 49ers (6-7)
The 49ers snapped a three game losing streak with a dominant performance against Chicago. Imagine how we all thought the 49ers would be in the mix of top NFC teams and instead we get the Great Value 49ers this season.
21. Dallas Cowboy (5-8)
Hey look we’ve all seen it before, there’s some teams that just win games they’re supposed to lose. Dallas is a team that somehow loses games they’re supposed to win. By the way, somebody might want to check on Micah Parsons.
22. New Orleans Saints (5-8)
The pressure on Saints’ interim head coach Dan Rizzi was evident on Sunday after he was seen yelling at rookie punter Matthew Hayball on the sideline. Wasn’t a great look if Rizzi is trying to secure that job permanently.
23. Cincinnati Bengals (5-8)
Imagine having one of the most explosive offenses in the league and your team can’t even sniff the playoffs.
24. Chicago Bears
Chicago will have a tough time explaining to the fans what went wrong this year. I’m not saying it was easier to explain it to the fans in years past, but this year they have very little excuses.
25. Tennessee Titans (3-10)
Will Levis didn’t throw any interceptions, but he didn’t throw any touchdowns, either. Tony Pollard rushed for over 100 yards, but he didn’t score any touchdowns, either. The Titans are ranked 30th in total points for a reason.
26. New York Jets (3-10)
The Jets playoff drought has now reached 14 seasons. The last time the Jets made the playoffs Darrelle Revis and LaDainian Tomlinson were on the roster. Those two gentlemen are currently in the Pro Football Hall of fame.
27. Carolina Panthers (3-10)
The Panthers had a another game where they really played well. That marks three weeks in a row where they’ve looked good, but ultimately didn’t win the game.
28. Cleveland Browns (3-10)
I think from here on in, the Browns portion of this article will be dedicated to Jameis Winston and his weekly doings. This week, Jameis was delivered from the pick six, but not the pick itself.
29. New England Patriots (3-10)
The Patriots come off of their bye week to take on Arizona and then Buffalo, both on the road.
30. Jacksonville Jaguars (3-10)
Jacksonville won their game on Sunday despite Mac Jones’ less than stellar performance at quarterback. Imagine being a team that will play all losing teams down the stretch and not be favored in any of those games.
31. Las Vegas Raiders (2-11)
Desmond Ridder will get the start at quarterback for the Raiders on Monday night versus the Atlanta Falcons. Based solely off of the history of him as a starter, his play should greatly strengthen the Raiders’ desire to draft a quarterback in the offseason.
32. New York Giants (2-11)
The Giants’ fans are getting uneasy and restless with these types of performances they saw on Sunday. I mean the team played good and these near victories could really hurt their draft chances. Come on guys stay on point.
