Flowery Branch, Ga – The Atlanta Falcons first year starter Michael Penix Jr is determined to have relationships off the field to build report on the Sundays.
When you factor in the past few quarterbacks for the Falcons, their leadership styles may have been different from each other but what they all had in common was not building relationships off the field with most, if any of their skill position players.
Penix believes that connecting with teammates off the field is just as important as on the field.
“It’s just the chemistry. You have to know your guys, not just on the field but off the field as well. That builds trust,” explained Penix. “When people ask me how I lead, I say I lead by trying to get to know my guys first.”
The second year quarterback understands that learning who players are outside the game can be a essential to getting a better understanding of personalities which can translate onto the practice field, meeting rooms and of course during the game.
“Not everybody is going to take leadership the same way. So seeing how they react in certain situations, that’s something that comes from off the field stuff. So now I can rip you because now you know its all coming out of love cause we spent all this time off the field,” says Penix.
Penix mentioned he’s spent time with the wide receivers and tight ends, including Kyle Pitts. He calls him his golf buddy.
If Penix can continue this leadership style, this could not only build trust when it comes to the play on the field, but it can translate to excellent communication no matter if it’s a disagreement, getting called out or even just improvising during a play in the game.
