Talking Stick Resort Arena, Phoenix, AZ -The Phoenix Mercury (6-3) captured their fourth win in a row behind Brittney Griner’s 24 points over the Chicago Sky (3-4) 96-79.
Phoenix came out to a hot start behind ball and player movement as they took of to a 10-5 lead to begin the game. Chicago looked to be out of rhythm as the Mercury’s defense keyed in on keeping the Sky out of the lane.
The Mercury continued to play with that same energy as the ball movement lead to open perimeter shots as Briann January and Stephanie Talbot took advantage. Phoenix took a 23-10 after the first period.
The second quarter started with more of the same as the Mercury continued to have the ball move all around the court leading to Griner taking advantage of quick post ups that resulted in easy points. They were also still hot from the perimeter as Talbot and Leilani Mitchell drained open jump shots.
Griner ended the half with 16 points and was a major reason Phoenix led 49-35 after the second quarter.
Coming out with a sense of urgency, the Sky looked much better offensively scoring 13 points in the first four and a half minutes of the quarter. The Mercury kept their composure and continued playing well on the offensive end of the floor.
Getting the ball down to Griner down low kept the Mercury hard to guard. Griner had 21 points after three quarters and the Mercury were up 72-62.
The Sky made another push to start the fourth quarter but this push was answered by the Mercury as well. Sticking with the game plan to feed Griner, it opened up shots for perimeter players like Diana Taurasi. Phoenix imposed their will on the Chicago the rest of the quarter as the lead got as 22 points at one point.
