Mercury Survive To Defeat Aces, 86-84

 

 

The Phoenix Mercury are now, (1-1), after defeating the Las Vegas Aces, (1-1), 86-84. The game was a back-and-forth affair that saw Phoenix be lead by Yvonne Turner, who had 18 points and 10 assists and Essence Carson who scored 20 points.

Las Vegas’ leading scorer was Kayla McBride with 15 points. A’ja Wilson struggled from the field, scoring 11 points on 4-19 shooting from the field.

The game started out fast and furious as both teams pushed the pace. The Mercury played well on defense getting two blocks in the first three minutes of the game. Las Vegas kept it close with the shooting of Jackie Young, who hit two three-pointers.

Phoenix was up 24-22 after the first quarter.

Turnovers by the Mercury led to points early in the second quarter for the Aces, which started a second quarter 19-5 run.

Phoenix climbed their way back into the game behind the three-point shot. Briann January hit three, 3-pointers in the quarter to cut the lead,43-42 at the half.

The third quarter was almost a replica of the second quarter as the Aces got out to a 11-2 run to start the quarter. The tide turned as the Mercury started to run their offense through Brittney Griner.

Griner had four points in the quarter and opened up opportunities for teammates. Las Vegas was up, 65-62, after three quarters.

The Mercury continued to run their offense through Griner in the fourth quarter, which led to a 7-2 run to start the quarter. The Aces were able to get back into the game and tied it up before Carson hit a huge three-pointer with 46 seconds left.

After a few possessions that ended in free throws and a turnover by DeWanna Bonner. Las Vegas was down two and ran a play for Wilson to create a shot. Wilson missed a hook shot, got the rebound and missed a short jumper.

There was 0.1 left on the clock and the last field goal attempt was block by Griner, that helped Phoenix survived.
