The headlines surrounding the Atlanta Falcons in this year’s training camp have centered on the makeup of their quarterback room and the unfortunate season-ending ACL tear of second-year edge Jalon Walker.
The Falcons also have a glaring issue at right tackle that has fallen under the radar. The team has been searching for stability at that position since Kaleb McGary’s season-ending injury last year and sudden retirement in March.
In line to start at that position are former Kansas City Chiefs teammates Juwann Taylor and Wanya Morris. Both Taylor and Morris have been sidelined due to injuries.
Taylor came off the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list on Tuesday. Therefore, he hasn’t taken that many reps in practice throughout OTAs or training camp.
Since Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. are left-handed quarterbacks, whoever starts at right tackle is responsible for blocking the quarterback’s blindside.
Given its positional value, tackles that are even statistically considered “average” will be hard to come by with the start of the regular season weeks away.
Here are some options on the market that general manager Ian Cunningham could bring in to provide short-term stability at the position.
Taylor Decker
Despite posting the second-lowest pass-block win rate of his career (89.3%), Decker has proven to be a reliable pass blocker over his 10 seasons in Detroit amid coaching and front-office turnover early in his career. The one-time Pro Bowler could provide leadership and experience up front for Atlanta.
Jack Conklin
Conklin has a connection with Kevin Stefanski by playing tackle for the Browns during all six of Stefanski’s years in Cleveland. Unfortunately, injuries have kept Conklin off the field in recent years, playing in just 22 games since 2023. Nonetheless, at his peak, he recorded a pass-block win rate of 92.4%.
Jonah Williams
A former first-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2019, Williams recorded a 91.2% pass-block win rate with the Arizona Cardinals last season. He also recorded a 63.4% run-block win rate, ranking around the middle of the pack for tackles. In the nine games he started for the Cardinals, he allowed 22 pressures, five quarterback hits and 13 hurries.
