Atlanta, Ga – The Atlanta Falcons once again suffer a painful loss, this time in overtime to the division foe Carolina Panthers, 30-27. This has been the case the last three weeks, which players and coaches can’t explain why.
The Falcons jumped out to a 21-10 lead in the first half while clicking on all cylinders.
Offensively, everything was going right in the first half. Michael Penix Jr. completed 91.7% of his passes and Bijan Robinson had two rushing touchdowns.
The momentum drastically changed in the second half as they were outscored 20-6, including the overtime. This is the second week in a row where the the Falcons lost in overtime and third week where they’ve lost within a touchdown late in the game.
Penix exited the game with a knee injury in the third quarter and didn’t return and Drake London didn’t return for overtime.
Head coach Raheem Morris took accountability for the loss and current downfall of the team.
“Not good. We’ve loss a bunch of games in a row in tight moments and you gotta find a way to win those games,” stated Morris. “It’s on me. It’s no such thing as a losing team, it’s a losing leader and I’m the leader and we lost.”
Although Morris is putting the blame on himself, the players believe otherwise. There is still belief in the locker room that this can turn around.
Robinson remains confident they can figure it out and wants to keep negativity out of the locker room.
“I think the biggest part is not letting nothing creep in the locker room,” said Robinson. “When negative energy or people talking about us, not in a great way or we have people arguing, that’s not going to make us better.”
Kirk Cousins entered the game for Penix in the third quarter and finished 6-14 for 48 yards. He led the Falcons on a six-play 28-yard drive that led to a game-tying field goal with 21 seconds left.
There was no update on Penix about his injury or if he will mis time or not.
One thing that seems evident is the team hasn’t quit on Morris and haven’t stop believing but they need to figure it out quickly before doubt starts to creep in the locker room.
