On Sunday, July 13, the future of MLB takes shape during the MLB Draft. We will see if they rise through the ranks of the minor leagues in the subsequent years, get traded for bigger pieces or flatline.

Regardless, who’s going to land where? Here’s some thoughts.

1. Washington Nationals – Ethan Holliday, SS/3B, Stillwater High School

There’s belief that the Nationals have narrowed their choices between Holliday and LSU pitcher Kade Anderson.

The chance for a quick call up may be very intriguing with Anderson but Holliday is seen as a potential quality defender and slugger at shortstop or third base. It will ultimately come down to if they’d be alright waiting or are looking for a quick start.

2. Los Angeles Angels – Kade Anderson, P, LSU

If you’re the Angels, you’re licking your lips at the runner up. Either you land a future slugger at third base or get a high ceiling pitcher.

In this instance, Anderson falls to No. 2 and the Angels get a future ace for their rotation. While he may not be up to the same level of last year’s class, Anderson still has the potential to be a future All-Star in today’s game.

3. Seattle Mariners – Seth Hernandez, P, Corona High School

There’s a chance that Hernandez could surpass Anderson as the top pitcher taken in the draft.

Lauded for his work ethic and ability to adjust to the game, he sounds like a quarterback on the pitchers mound. With Seattle needing a potential future ace, this would be the perfect option for them to develop.

4. Colorado Rockies – Aiva Arquette, SS, Oregon State

Many in the industry believe that if Holliday should fall to Colorado, he’d be a lock there, but he doesn’t.

While pitching is a need for the worst team in baseball, getting someone who scouts see as one of the best hitters in the country to play shortstop or second base would be a huge win for the Rockies. They’ll still need a lot of help, but it’s a good start.

5. St. Louis Cardinals – Eli Willits, SS, Fort-Cobb Broxton High School

If you go by what the current advisor to President of Baseball Operations and the future President Chaim Bloom did in his time with the Boston Red Sox, then Willits is likely going to be the pick.

A switch-hitting shortstop at 17-years old with great plate discipline and bat-to-ball skills is something that’s up their alley.

6. Pittsburgh Pirates – Billy Carlson, SS, Corona High School

The Pirates seemingly are taking the Houston Astros method of stockpiling young players, developing them and unleashing them.

While pitchers Jamie Arnold and Liam Doyle are tempting quick call ups, they have three top-five pitching prospects in the organization who are in Triple-A and projected to be up by next year. Carlson is seen as a five-tool potential player, which is going to be hard to pass up on that.

7. Miami Marlins – Jojo Parker, SS, Purvis High School

Miami has gone the high school route for the last two years, and that probably is going to continue.

Parker, a shortstop going into the draft, could move over to third base or second base and give them the bat they really need. Obviously, it will take time but as long as they build up, they’ll eventually get somewhere.

8. Toronto Blue Jays – Jamie Arnold, P, Florida State

Toronto has some arms coming up through their system, three of which could be up as early as next year.

Even though one of which has drawn some comparisons to former Cy Young Award Winner Blake Snell (Ricky Tiedemann), with Arnold being compared to another former Cy Young Award Winner (Chris Sale), why not kick the tires on him. This rings especially true when Arnold could be up early.

9. Cincinnati Reds – Liam Doyle, P, Tennessee

Whispers around the scouting community believe Cincinnati goes with the best player available. If that’s the case, Doyle must be their pick if they are okay going with a pitcher.

There’s concern that Doyle may not be a starter at the major league level but with aging starters and an aging closer as well, it may behoove them to take a flier on the Tennessee pitcher.

10. Chicago White Sox – Kayson Cunningham, SS/2B, Johnson High School

The White Sox have done well with their high school picks and with second base being a need that will come up, Cunningham may be the right piece for them.

While he has a mature approach to hitting, although he doesn’t have quite the power of some of the other prospects in this draft, he knows how to use the field. The glove is also solid, but many see him winding up at second base.

11. Athletics – Ike Irish, C/OF, Auburn

12. Texas Rangers – Daniel Pierce, SS, Mill Creek High School

13. San Francisco Giants – Kyson Witherspoon, P, Oklahoma

14. Tampa Bay Rays – Steele Hall, SS, Hewitt-Trussville High School

15. Boston Red Sox – Gavin Kilen, 2B, Tennessee

16. Minnesota Twins – Gavin Fein, 3B, Great Oak High School

17. Chicago Cubs – Gage Wood, P, Arkansas

18. Arizona Diamondbacks – Caden Bodine, C, Coastal Carolina

19. Baltimore Orioles – Jace LaViolette, OF, Texas A&M

20. Milwaukee Brewers – Marek Houston, SS, Wake Forest

21. Houston Astros – Wehiwa Aloy, SS, Arkansas

22. Atlanta Braves – Kruz Schoolcraft, P, Sunset High School

23. Kansas City Royals – Slater de Brun, OF, Summit High School

24. Detroit Tigers – Xavier Neyens, 3B, Mount Vernon High School

25. San Diego Padres – Josh Hammond, 3B, Wesleyan-Christian Academy

26. Philadelphia Phillies – Tyler Bremner, P, UC Santa Barbara

27. Cleveland Guardians – Brendan Summerhill, OF, Arizona
