Tampa Bay – No. 1 overall pick Cameron Ward made his Tennessee Titans debut and starts what many hope will be a fruitful new era for the franchise. The Titans opened up the 2025 preseason against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road as they lost 29-7.
This is also the first season for new front office man Mike Borgonzi who got to get the first look at his roster in real action.
Overview
The starters for the Titans played two series on the night. Cameron Ward was 0-2 on the first drive, leading to a three and out.
In the second drive, he was surgical. Ward went 5-6 for 67 yards that led the team to their only touchdown of the night by Tony Pollard. Ward ended his night with an impressive 5-8, 67-yard performance.
For the second and third string offense, they struggled to move the ball and seemed to be out of sync for most of their time on the field. Tim Boyle and Brandon Allen combined for three interceptions on the night.
Despite the offense not scoring, the backup running backs did show some juice. Kalel Mullings had the best night of the reserves ending his night with 33 yards on seven carries.
Defensively as a whole, they struggled for most of the night, especially the secondary. Sophomore cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. had a nice pass breakup in the first quarter and played well most of his snaps.
The front seven played well on what was a slippery field at Raymond James Stadium. They were able to get some pressure on the quarterback. Cedric Gray and James Williams both had solid nights as they compete for the second linebacker spot next to veteran Cody Barton.
Special teams played well on the night as well, a big improvement for the unit from last year.
Positives:
-Starting offensive line looks like a much improved unit.
–Ward is good and should only improve from here.
-Calvin Ridley is a true No. 1 receiver (3 Targets – 3 Receptions – 50 yards on the night).
Negatives:
-Tyjae Spears went down with a lower leg injury. No update as of now.
-Second and third units did not play well.
-Penalties are an issue for the team. The team had seven penalties for 61 yards on the night.
-Turnovers plagued the offense in the second half. The team had three interceptions on the night allowing 14 points off turnovers.
Tennessee will continue their NFC South preseason tour as they head to Georgia for joint practices with the Atlanta Falcons next week. The preseason game is on Friday at 7:00 pm EST.
