The Detroit Pistons and guard Cade Cunningham have agreed to a five-year maximum rookie extension worth $224 million.

Cunningham, who is entering into his fourth season, has averaged 20 points, 6.5 assist and 5.0 rebounds per game throughout his three-year career. Last year, he averaged a career high 22.7 points and 7.5 assist per game.

Cunningham has never played more than 64 games in a season, including a career low 12 games due to a left shin injury.

The Detroit Pistons are coming off a 14-68 record last season, which was the NBA’s worst record. The Pistons fired head Monty Williams after one season.

On June 30, 2024, the Pistons hired J.B. Bickerstaff as their new head coach. Bickerstaff previously coached the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2020-2024 before getting fired.
