Atlanta, Ga – The Atlanta Braves may have uncovered a key contributor in Dominic Smith, who has made an immediate impression since arriving this offseason.
After joining Atlanta from the Boston Red Sox, Smith has primarily filled a designated hitter (DH) role, stepping in on days when Drake Baldwin is not occupying that spot. Even with limited chances, just 11 starts so far, he has taken full advantage of every opportunity.
Through the early portion of the season, Smith has been one of the most productive hitters on the roster, posting a .395 batting average alongside a .415 on base percentage and a .684 slugging mark.
He has already driven in 15 runs and launched three home runs, highlighted by a dramatic walk-off grand slam earlier in the year. He followed that up with another clutch showing on Tuesday, ripping a three-RBI double in the eighth inning to put Atlanta in front.
Playing time could soon become more difficult to secure. With Sean Murphy nearing a return, the Braves are expected to shuffle their lineup, which could result in fewer at-bats for Smith if Murphy sees time at DH.
Even so, Smith’s performance is making that decision far from simple.
After finishing last season with five home runs across 63 games, he is already trending toward surpassing that total and could potentially reach a new personal best. More importantly, he has consistently come through in critical situations, adding value beyond just the stat line.
Manager Walt Weiss spoke about Smith’s presence after Tuesday’s victory, recalling how difficult he was to face in previous matchups.
“I’ve watched him a lot from the other side,” Weiss said. “When he was in the division, it never felt good when he was in the box in a big spot. He’s a tough out. He’s not going to chase and the ball’s going to be put in play.”
That mindset has been shaped by learning from some of the game’s greats. Smith shared that he spent time discussing hitting with Barry Bonds during his tenure with the San Francisco Giants, and after joining Atlanta, he quickly connected with Chipper Jones to continue developing his approach.
Those lessons are already paying off in meaningful ways.
What began as a limited role has quickly evolved into something much bigger. If Smith continues producing at this level, the Braves will have little choice but to find a way to keep his bat in the lineup.
