Panthers Open Up Conference Play With A Loss

ATLANTA — Georgia State Panthers start Sunbelt Conference play by falling to UT Arlington Mavericks 10-7 Friday at the GSU Baseball Complex. Ryan Blanton and Jaylen Woullard each homered in attempt to give the Panthers the win.

Blanton gave Georgia State (9-9, 0-1 Sun Belt) the early lead when he cleared the bases with a grand slam to right field in the second inning for his team-leading fourth homer of the season and No. 19 of his career.

That put GSU up 4-0 but UT Arlington (10-9, 1-0 Sun Belt) answered in its next at bat on Omar Salinas’ two-run homer to pull within 4-2.

Then the Mavericks took the lead in the fourth by scoring four runs. Noah Vaughan hit a two-run homer to tie the game. Zac Cook followed with a run-scoring double and then came home on Easton Johnson’s single.

UTA led 8-4 in the eighth when Romero Greer and Darius Sewell singled to put runners at first and second with one out. That brought Woullard to the plate, and he hit the first pitch over the right field fence for his first homer of the season. Greer went 3-4 on the evening and moved his batting average to .367 for the season.

The Mavericks added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth to seal the game.

The series continues with a 2 p.m. game Saturday. PLEASE NOTE: Sunday’s series finale has been moved up to a noon start.
