NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Mike Vrabel’s return to Nashville ended in a victory for the New England Patriots, as they defeated the Tennessee Titans 31–13. The Titans started fast but faded quickly, falling to 1–6 on the season.
Overview
Offensively, the Titans opened as strong as they have all year. Quarterback Cameron Ward led a six-play, 34-yard drive capped by a field goal to open the game. Then he followed with a 38-yard touchdown strike to fellow rookie Chimere Dike on the next possession.
Tennessee put up 13 points in the first half but failed to score again after the break.
Ward delivered one of his most efficient outings of the season, completing 25 of 34 passes for 255 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He also had a fumble that was returned for a touchdown.
New England’s ground game proved to be the difference. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson and quarterback Drake Maye consistently found lanes against a depleted Titans front.
Titan’s anchor on the defense, defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, exited early with a hamstring injury and did not return — a loss that visibly deflated Tennessee’s energy and presence up front.
The Patriots capitalized, adding 14 unanswered points in the second half before sealing the game with a defensive touchdown on a fumble return (Ward fumble) by linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson.
Positives
- Ward Trending Up: The rookie quarterback turned in his most complete performance of the season, showing improved poise and decision-making at home.
- Young Receivers Stepping Up: With Calvin Ridley sidelined, rookies Chimere Dike and Elic Ayomanor combined for 99 yards and a touchdown, flashing promising chemistry with Ward.
Negatives
- Simmons’ Absence Looms Large: The loss of Jeffery Simmons created a noticeable void in the middle of Tennessee’s defense, which continues to search for stability and star power.
- Vrabel Gets His Revenge: In his return to Nashville, former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel handed Tennessee its second-worst home loss of the season.
- New Coach, Familiar Results: Interim head coach Mike McCoy’s debut ended in defeat as the Titans dropped their sixth straight game, falling to 1–6.
Tennessee will travel to Indianapolis in Week 8 to face the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium before returning home to host the Los Angeles Chargers ahead of their Week 10 bye.
