Match Preview: Atlanta United vs. San Jose Earthquakes

ATLANTA (Sept. 18, 2018) – Atlanta United returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 19 when it travels to face San Jose Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium. Atlanta enters the match in first place in the Supporters’ Shield Standings (17-5-6, 57 points) while San Jose sits in twelfth place in the Western Conference (4-16-8, 20 points). The match is scheduled to kick-off at 11 p.m. EST and will be nationally televised on UniMás.

In the first match of its current road trip, Atlanta defeated Colorado Rapids 3-0 on Sept. 15. behind three first-half goals. Miguel Almirón scored twice and recorded an assist, Tito Villalba added the third goal, Julian Gressel tallied two assists and the Atlanta defense posted its seventh shutout of the season. The club has now tied the MLS record in the post-shootout era for most away wins in an MLS season with nine. A win in San Jose would put Atlanta alone with 10 and also equal the post-shootout era record of 32 away points.

San Jose is coming off a 5-1 loss at home to Sporting Kansas City on Sept. 15. Gerso Fernandes scored a brace, while Felipe Gutierrez, Ike Opara and Krisztian Nemeth each chipped in a goal for Sporting KC, who jumped to the top of the Western Conference. Danny Hoesen scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season for the Earthquakes, who announced Monday morning that they have parted ways with head coach Mikael Stahre. Assistant coach Steve Ralston has taken over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
