Georgia State Baseball: Panthers Drop Series with 7-1 Loss to UTA

ATLANTA — Georgia State fell to UT Arlington 7-1 in Sunday’s series finale at the GSU Baseball Complex, dropping the Sun Belt Conference series two games to one.

UTA (11-10, 2-1 Sun Belt) starter Jakob Hernandez (2-0) held the Panthers two just two hits in 6.1 innings with three walks and eight strikeouts.

GSU (10-10, 1-2 Sun Belt) scored first in the game, pushing across a run in the third inning as Jack Thompson reached on an error and scored on Ryan Blanton’s two-out, RBI-single. Blanton had two of the Panthers’ four hits on the day.

But the Mavericks answered immediately with three runs in the fourth off GSU starter Brandon Baker (0-2). UTA added two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to put the game away.

“We never could get anything going in all three phases today,” head coach Greg Frady said. “We were working kind of uphill pitching-wise, we didn’t play clean defense and the bats just went quiet. All those things don’t make for a good day.

“We just have to play better. Conference baseball is tough. You have to give their credit for pitching well, but there’s no feeling sorry for yourself and you’ve got to get back up and get ready to go again.”

Georgia State’s homestand concludes Tuesday with a 6 p.m. game against Furman that will air live on PantherVision. The Panthers’ next Sun Belt weekend is at South Alabama.
