Despite Rough Start, Cam Ward Has Been Steadily Improving In Training Camp

There is a stark difference in the feel around Nashville since the Tennessee Titans selected Cameron Ward with the first pick in April. His leadership, poise and willingness to learn have been on display since he got off the plane. The one thing that has taken some adjusting is putting it all together on the field.

The first couple of days of training camp for the rookie were laden with interceptions and timing issues indicative of a young quarterback getting to know his teammates and rhythms of the NFL. Ward has been on record calling the offense “mid” and that sentiment has been echoed by the coaches noting the importance of stacking days as a team to help their new signal caller’s development.

The trends have started to tick in the right direction in recent days though.Ward and the offense have been working on quick passes and getting the timing down. He seems to have a rapport with lead receiver Calvin Ridley and is building that same confidence in the rest of the offense.

Offensive coordinator Nic Holz has had high praise for Ward, stating that he doesn’t make the same mistake twice. Holz and Brian Callahan both have echoed that all interceptions aren’t weighed the same. “Each interception has its own story,” Holz said after Saturday’s practice. Despite all of that, Ward has been a consummate pro receiving praise from his teammates and coaches alike for his steady growth as a player.

This is a great sign for a Titans team that needs the quarterback position to be steady to be successful moving forward. The team will get a chance to test themselves against an opposing force as they will travel to Florida for joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
