ATLANTA (Nov. 15, 2017) – Major League Soccer today announced that Atlanta United forward Tito Villalba won AT&T Goal of the Year and teammate Brad Guzan earned MLS Save of the Year. The MLS Save of the Year was unveiled on FOXSports.com.
Villalba’s right-footed game-winner on July 21 against Orlando City SC captured the top honors. The Argentine Designated Player silenced Orlando City Stadium when, in the 86th minute of a 0-0 match, he controlled a throw-in on the left wing, took one touch into a pocket of space and blasted a 30-yard game-winning strike past goalkeeper Joe Bendik. That late goal also served as the exclamation point to a season-high four-game winning streak.
The top-voted save of 2017 was Guzan’s incredible reaction stop against New York Red Bulls striker Bradley Wright-Phillips on Oct. 15. The 65th-minute save occurred after the host Red Bulls played a quick restart that led to a cross from the left side of the box. Wright-Phillips was in position for what appeared to be a high-percentage tap-in from five yards out, however Guzan spoiled BWP’s moment, diving to his left and parrying the ball over the crossbar en route to a clean sheet and 0-0 road draw.
The AT&T Goal of the Year and MLS Save of the Year were determined by fan votes on MLSsoccer.com. The Goal of the Year has been awarded since the league’s inaugural 1996 season and the Save of the Year was established in 2009.
