ATLANTA (June 5, 2017) – Atlanta United announced today that midfielder Miguel Almirón and forward Kenwyne Jones have received international call-ups. Almirón joined Paraguay following Atlanta’s match in Vancouver for an international friendly against Peru on June 8. He will re-join the club before Atlanta’s match in Chicago on June 10. Jones is away with Trinidad and Tobago for two World Cup Qualifiers against the United States on June 8 and Costa Rica on June 13. He will re-join Atlanta following the match against Costa Rica.
Almirón has eight career appearances for Paraguay, debuting with La Albirroja on Sept. 5, 2015 in a friendly versus Chile. He also represented Paraguay at the 2016 Copa America Centenario and most recently in 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying. He started a pair of World Cup Qualifiers in March, playing the full 90 minutes in a 2-1 win over Ecuador and 45 minutes in a 3-0 loss to Brazil. The 23-year-old Designated Player leads Atlanta United with seven goals this season and has also added four assists. He was voted MLS Player of the Week in Week 12 for his three-goal performance in a 4-1 win over Houston and again in Week 13 for his brace in a 3-1 win against New York City FC.
Jones, a 32-year-old forward and captain for Trinidad and Tobago, has scored 23 goals in 88 appearances for his country. He started in Trinidad and Tobago’s two World Cup Qualifiers in March against Panama and Mexico. For Atlanta United, he’s appeared in 12 games, made four starts and has scored two goals.
Atlanta United returns to action on Saturday, June 10 against Chicago Fire. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. from Toyota Park and will be televised nationally on UniMas.
