PHOENIX – The three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury today agreed to sign and trade center Kelsey Bone to the Las Vegas Aces in exchange for a 2019 second-round pick and 2018 third-round selection (26th overall). The 2019 draft selection was acquired yesterday by the Aces from the Indiana Fever in exchange for Kayla Alexander.
“Kelsey Bone has been consistent in saying that she wanted to be a starter in the WNBA, and obviously that was not going to happen in Phoenix,” said Mercury General Manager Jim Pitman. “Today we executed a sign-and-trade deal with Las Vegas that brought back the best assets possible, including a future second-round pick that we expect to have great value.”
The 2018 third-round pick acquired by Phoenix also comes from Indiana, but was sent to San Antonio (now Las Vegas) on May 9, 2017. With the addition of this year’s third round pick, Phoenix now holds four picks in the 2018 WNBA Draft: 8th overall (first round), 20th and 21st overall (second round), and 26th overall (third round).
The 6-foot-4 Bone was acquired by the Mercury on June 25, 2016 from the Connecticut Sun. She appeared in 20 games for Phoenix following the trade, averaging 3.0 points and 2.5 rebounds in those contests. The four-year player holds career averages of 9.4 points and 5.2 rebounds in 135 games, with her best season coming in 2015 when she was voted and All-Star. While Phoenix has held the rights to Bone, she sat out the 2017 season.
