Truist Park – The Atlanta Braves will have to lean on the Sunday to try and take the series over the Cleveland Guardians after a 6-0 loss.
Atlanta was only allowed five hits all game and the offense wasn’t there tonight for the Braves. Ronald Acuna Jr. recorded a triple in the fifth inning and Matt Olson hit a double in the 9th inning but the Braves couldn’t capitalize.
Braves manager Walt Weiss understands that there will be nights like this, especially when the pitcher on the other side is having a good night.
“Offensively, we just couldn’t get anything going against [Parker] Messick tonight. You know he handled us tonight,” stated Weiss. “It’s a really unique changeup that he’s got so he did a nice job against us.”
Messick, a rookie, allowed four hits, two walks and struck out five batters in 6.2/3 innings and improved to 2-0.
On the other hand, Braves starter Martin Perez pitched five innings and allowed one run (home run to Jose Ramirez) on two hits, three walks and struck out two batters.
Perez was was left with the loss but his spirts were high knowing that he is feeling the best he felt in a while.
“I think today was a good game. I was attacking more of the strike zone and was not missing too far from the box,” said Perez. “Every time when I go out there, I feel better with better movements too.”
Weiss couldn’t have agreed more.
“Martin did a nice job keeping it together there. Five innings, one run, take that every time. He knows how to defend himself and navigate lineups.”
The rubber match will be Sunday night in a national televised game on NBC. Atlanta is trying to keep their streak of “not losing a series this season” going.
