Atlanta United’s Josef Martinez Voted Alcatel MLS Player Of The Week

ATLANTA (Sept. 19, 2017) – Atlanta United forward Josef Martinez was voted the Alcatel MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 28thweek of the 2017 MLS season after scoring consecutive hat tricks. Martinez was also named Player of the Week in Week 2, and joins Miguel Almirón as the second Atlanta United player to be recognized twice this season.

Martinez scored three first-half goals in Atlanta’s 7-0 win against the New England Revolution on Sept. 13. He followed that performance with a second-straight hat trick, becoming just the third player in league history to do so, in Atlanta’s 3-3 draw against Orlando City on Saturday, Sept. 16. in front of an MLS record-breaking crowd of 70,425 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The Venezuelan forward has now scored 16 goals in just 14 games (11 starts) and climbed his way back into the MLS Golden Boot race. He is currently tied for fourth with 16, trailing New York City FC’s David Villa by three goals with two games in hand. Martinez is averaging 1.39 goals per 90 minutes.

Atlanta returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 20 to take on the LA Galaxy at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (7:00 p.m. ET, ESPN2), before hosting the Montreal Impact on Sunday, Sept. 24 (5 p.m. ET, FOX/FOX Deportes/TVAS).
