Atlanta, GA – The Tennessee Titans traveled to Georgia to take on yet another NFC South opponent this preseason. They were able to hold on and defeat the Atlanta Falcons 23-20 for their first victory of the preseason.
After participating in joint practices with the Falcons, the team got a good test in a Week 2 exhibition.
Tennessee decided to sit their veterans, most notably, Calvin Ridley and Tyler Lockett, to give some young players an opportunity.
Overview
The Titans first team played just three series in the game. Rookie Cameron Ward threw to the second-unit receivers for all of them, and it was a tough outing to say the least.
Ward went 2/7 (28.5%) for 42 yards on the night, a stark contrast from his debut last week. Despite the stat line, he was on-time and made the right decisions. The receivers were underwhelming outside of rookie standout Elic Ayomanor. Ayomanor ended his night with 47 yards on two receptions.
The offense did have a better showing overall than last week, putting up 17 points on the night compared to just three against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Defensively, they swarmed for defensive coach Dennard Wilson all night. The linebacker battle heated up as Cedric Gray got the start over James Williams beside Cody Barton. Gray had a big night posting five tackles and a sack.
Pressure was generated all night by the front seven. They were able to help create an interception returned for a touchdown by safety Kendall Brooks (the extra point was missed).
Positives
-Cedric Gray and Elic Ayomanor cemented their spots on this roster with their performances.
-Pressure was relentless, recorded two sacks on the night.
-Held the Falcons to 5/15 (33%) on third downs.
-17 points scored by the offense, six point scored by the defense.
Negatives
-Wide receivers didn’t show up for the first team offense with only two completions for 42 yards by the starting unit.
-Lost the turnover battle 2-1.
