Draft Day Pays The Bills – Buffalo Bills Draft Profile

The Buffalo Bills are one of the league’s premier rosters and it showed last season. Quarterback Josh Allen took a major step forward and the team followed suit. But, after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs, it was evident the Bills are missing some pieces to make the next leap in their progression.

The draft is a chance to improve and correct those shortcomings. Buffalo has eight picks and should look to make an impact on all of them. Thought the team is talented they need to round it out and with as deep a draft as you will see, they could find themselves some good players on every day of this years draft.

 

Day 1

Round 1, Pick 25: Breece Hall, RB, Iowa State

Day one is a no-brainer for the Bills. One of the only weak points for Buffalo is their offensive backfield. They should look to upgrade that position with their first pick.

Devin Singletary and Zach Moss have been marginal at best. The Bills need to get a back that can control a game in both the pass and on the ground. Breece Hall is that guy.

His big play ability is not to be overstated. He has the burst to get through holes and effect the second and third levels of defenses. He also has soft hands in the pass game and can make the first defender miss with ease. Buffalo needs a dynamic runner to balance out their offensive attack and compete with the other top teams in the league.

 

Day 2

Round 2, Pick 25: Wan’Dale Robinson, WR, Kentucky

Round 3, Pick 25: Marcus Jones, CB, Houston

Day two will be a continuance of day one for Buffalo as they should look to strengthen weak points in the team’s makeup.

Part of that is finding a viable third receiving option as well as getting some young cornerback depth.

Targeting a player like Wan’Dale Robinson to play the slot position would give the Bills a lot of options on offense. Robinson is a bit on the small side, standing only 5’8”, but what he lacks in size he packs in speed. Robinson would allow Buffalo to run gadget plays and also get him out in space to make plays.

Jones is another smaller player but has excellent coverage skills and isn’t afraid to get physical at the point of attack. He has all the tools to be a starter but as of right now is more than capable of being a nickel corner. Also, it doesn’t hurt being able to learn from a perennial All-Pro in Tredavious White.

 

Day 3

Round 4, Pick 25: Chigo Okonkwo, TE, Maryland

Round 5, Pick 25: Jaxson Kirkland, OL, Washington

Round 6, Pick 6: Owen Pappoe, LB, Auburn

Round 6, Pick 24: Devonnsha Maxwell, DL, Chattanooga

Round 7, Pick 10: Quentin Lake, Safety, UCLA

Day three should be the same song and dance for Buffalo as it is for every team. Add depth and find quality players in the late rounds to fill out the roster.

With one of the most potent rosters in the league, the Bills’ front office should look to get pieces that can develop behind the scenes to take over when the veterans move on.

Players like Okonkwo, Pappoe, Maxwell and Lake all fit that very criteria.

Okonkwo has all the athletic tools to be dangerous but lacks true blocking chops to make an impact on early downs. Pappoe and Maxwell both are solid for niche work on the defensive line but need to develop moves to be all-purpose options.

Quentin Lake is a special case though, as he has NFL pedigree as his father, Carnell Lake, played in the league. Lake is a quick footed safety that can play downhill or patrol the backend. He does have issues with trusting his eyes at times, which is why he isn’t being listed higher, but with Micah Hyde getting older, Buffalo will need him.

There are many scenarios that could play out for Buffalo on draft weekend but this one would give them the best outcome. They should circle the wagons and bring these players in to bolster their strong roster with young talent. Who knows? Maybe they find a diamond in the rough.
