Vanderbilt Advances After Grand Slam Seals Win Over Georgia Tech In Regional, 14-11

Nashville – The Vanderbilt Commodores (43-15) won in fashion over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (31-25) with an 11th inning grand slam by Isaiah Thomas to seal the win, 14-11 on the last night of the Nashville Regional at Hawkins Field.

Thomas, who was just a triple away from the cycle, went 3-5 during the game.

It started with the Commodores coming out early in the first inning with a run by CF Enrique Bradfield. Tech answered with a run of their own as C Kevin Parada and DH Drew Compton would score off a single to right field by 3B John-Henry Malloy.

They would follow that up with another run when RF Andrew Reid singled 1B Andrew Jenkins home to push the lead 3-1 heading into the second inning.

The Commodores would comeback with four runs, one at the top of the third and three at the top of the fourth inning.

After Vandy scored two more runs at the top of the fifth, Tech would have a five-run fifth inning to take a 8-7 lead highlighted by a Luke Waddell home run to start off a scoring flurry. Stephen Reid also homered to right field scoring Malloy and Jenkins.

The Yellow Jackets was able to benefit from their batting rotation which accounted for nine hits on the night.

Dominic Keegan would hit a two-run home run at the top of the eighth to give the Commodores a 9-8 lead. The Yellow Jackets would capitalize on a two-strike home run by Compton to tie the game 9-9 and forced extra innings.

After the grand slam by Thomas, the Commodores would score one more run on a Gonzalez double that sent SS Carter Young home.

The Yellow Jackets would attempt a comeback with a Parada home run that would send LF Tres Gonzalez home to cut the deficit to 14-11.

P Nick Maldonado would come in to close the game on the mound for Vandy.
