The Nashville Regional got underway with Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (30-23) rallying to beat the Indiana State Sycamores (30-20) 7-6.
This matchup featured two of the best players in the regional bracket in SS Luke Waddell of Georgia Tech and catcher Max Wright of Indiana State.
Indiana State started the game hot with three hits in seven at bats and two runs scored. Catcher Grant McGill was the catalyst with his RBI setting up the two scores.
Waddell and CF Tres Gonzalez started off with two pop-fly outs at the bottom of the first inning. Kevin Parada followed that up grounding out to end the inning, finishing a strong start for Sycamore’s pitcher Geremy Guerrero.
At the top of the 2nd inning, 3B Brian Fuentes sent a home-run to deep left center field to further the Sycamores’ lead 3-0.
The Yellow Jackets answered with a two-run homer that sailed to over the left field wall by 1B Andrew Jenkins.
Georgia Tech pitcher Brant Hurter seemed to find his rhythm at the bottom of the second after a rocky start. Hurter ended the inning with two ground outs and a strike out.
Hurter had an up and down outing after the 2nd inning and didn’t look comfortable on the mound.
Hurter’s day was done after six innings. He ended with a 3.90 ERA, seven strikeouts and seven hits allowed. The Yellow Jackets would make three pitching changes in the 7th inning with Sam Crawford taking over for Hurter along with Zach Maxwell and Josiah Siegel taking the mound.
The Sycamores also made a pitching change at the bottom of the 7th with Tyler Grauer taking over for Guerrero. Guerrero ended his day after seven innings with a 1.99 ERA, one strike out and seven hits allowed.
After the Sycamores scored four more runs, the Yellow Jackets would turn it on at the bottom of the 7th inning scoring two runs to cut the Sycamore lead to 6-4, prompting another Indiana State pitching change with Connor Fenlong taking over for Grauer.
RF Stephen Reid would then send a grounder out to right field to bring home John-Henry Malloy and Gonzalez to tie the game 6-6. DH Drew Compton recorded hist first hit of the game after that to send Andrew Jenkins home to take the lead 7-6.
After the 7th inning rally that saw five runs scored for the Yellow Jackets, they closed the game out with a double-play off of a Grant McGill fly out with the runner trying to tag on the play, who was called out.
They will face the winner of Presbyterian vs. Vanderbilt on on Saturday at 6:00 pm eastern.
