The month of December keeps getting better for Washington Football Team’s rookie Chase Young. A few days after the team won the NFC East and secured a playoff berth, the NFL announced that Young has been named the NFC Defensive Player and NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month.
This recognition further strengthens his case for Defensive Rookie of the Year. Young has been a dominant force since stepping onto the field but especially in the last stretch of the season. In the last five games, he tallied 17 total tackles, including three tackles for a loss, three sacks, two forced fumble recoveries, three passes defensed and a touchdown.
During December, Young became the second player in NFL history to register at least two games in their rookie season with a forced fumble, fumble recovery and a sack, joining Terrell Suggs in 2003. Both accomplished the feat in a single month.
Young is also the first rookie in franchise history to ever win a player of the month honor. He also joins linebacker London Fletcher as the sixth NFC Defensive Player of the Month in franchise history and the first to win a player of the month award since Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins in 2016.
He has a chance to show his greatness in front of national eyes on Saturday as Young makes his first playoff appearance in the NFL when Washington takes on Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
