WNBA Top 25 End Of Season Player Rankings

With the WNBA Finals getting underway last night, the most interesting season in the history of the league will be getting close to crowning a champion. But before the Seattle Storm and the Las Vegas Aces battle to find out who is the best team in the league for the 2020 season, let’s take a look at who had the best season in the WNBA during the “Wubble.”

This season, the league did miss a number of star players including last season’s Most Valuable Player in Washington Mystics’ forward Elena Delle-Donne. But that does not take away the outstanding efforts performed by every single player, coach and individual that made this a complete success. 

Now my rankings will not include players who were excused due to health, social injustice or injury. Also, the player would have had to play at least 75% or at least 17 out of their teams 22 overall games. So here is my end of season WNBA Top 25 players list, starting with the top five:

 

1. A’ja Wilson- Forward- Las Vegas Aces
2. Breanna Stewart- Forward- Seattle Storm
3. Courtney Vandersloot- Guard- Chicago Sky
4. Candace Parker- Forward- Los Angeles Sparks
5. Diana Taurasi- Guard- Phoenix Mercury

You have to start any ranking with the league’s MVP in Wilson. But what makes her even more special is that she was second team all-defense and her numbers made up for the loss of All-Star Liz Cambage. Stewart missed all of last season with an injury and she picked up where she left off. She led the league’s best overall regular season team in scoring, rebounding, steals and blocks per game. 

Vandersloot is the league’s version of Steve Nash because she’s the best playmaker and the only person in the league to average a double-double (13.6 points and a league record 10 assists per game). Parker won the league’s Defensive Player of the Year and she led the league in rebounding. Taurasi got off to a slow start but she finished with the most three pointers made in the league and finished in the top 10 in both scoring and assists.

7. DeWanna Bonner- Forward- Connecticut Sun
8. Angel McCoughtry- Forward- Las Vegas Aces
9. Betnijah Laney- Guard/Forward- Atlanta Dream
10. Napheesa Collier- Center- Minnesota Lynx

Averaging 22.8 points a game, Ogunbowale was far and away the league’s leading scorer and had 15 games she scored 20 or more points. Bonner was traded to Connecticut and proved why she was worth being traded for three first round draft picks. She finished in the top 10 overall in the league in scoring, rebounding and steals per game this season. The league’s leader in PER, McCoughtry did not score as much as she did when she was in Atlanta. However, her efficiency was off the charts. She finished the season shooting over 51% from the floor, 47% from the three point line and hit 88% of her free throws. 

Not only was Laney the Most Improved Player in 2020, but she scored 11.5 points per game more this season compared to last season, as the Dream fell one game short of the playoffs. With All-Star center Sylvia Fowles only playing seven games, Collier not only stepped into her spot but she flourished. She finished the season in the top 10 in rebounding, steals and blocks and she led the league in minutes as Minnesota finished in the top four of the standings. 

 

While the top ten earned their spots, there are many other players who were considered and deserve honorable mentions. Here is the rest of my Top 25:

18. Dearica Hamby- Forward- Las Vegas Aces
19. Crystal Dangerfield- Guard- Minnesota Lynx
20. Jewell Lloyd- Guard- Seattle Storm
21. Courtney Williams- Guard- Atlanta Dream
22. Kahleah Copper- Forward- Chicago Sky

Despite difficult circumstances, the WNBA is going to finish out their season strong. Without the players on this list, it wouldn’t have been possible.
